On August 27, Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group released a new achievement in the industrial utilization of phosphogypsum – high-quality anhydrite. This new achievement was unveiled at the 9th National Phosphorus-Fluorine Ecological Industry Technology Innovation (Guizhou Phosphate Chemical) Forum held in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province.
He Guangliang (Gordon He), Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group, stated that the enterprise has effectively removed harmful impurities from phosphogypsum through process innovation, successfully producing high-quality anhydrite with excellent performance, considerable scale, and low cost. This technology represents a core breakthrough in the enterprise's scientific research on phosphogypsum; this disruptive technology will inject strong momentum into the development of related industries and demonstrates enormous value potential and application prospects.
He Guangliang (Gordon He) released the enterprise's latest achievement in phosphogypsum utilization.
With the advancement of comprehensive utilization technologies, phosphogypsum is gradually transforming from an "environmental protection burden" into an industrial resource. In recent years, application technologies for phosphogypsum – such as in the production of building materials, cement retarders, soil conditioners, and road base materials – have continuously advanced, and the utilization rate has increased significantly. Among these applications, anhydrite exhibits remarkable competitiveness in four aspects: "more stable, whiter, finer, and more cost-effective," and can meet the high-standard demands for gypsum materials across multiple industries. It has been fully proven that anhydrite can replace part of calcium carbonate and be used in the production of plastic packaging materials, municipal pipes and profiles, and other products.
He Guangliang (Gordon He) introduced that the successful R&D of high-quality anhydrite has opened up broad prospects for the resource-oriented, value-added, and industrialized utilization of phosphogypsum. This product boasts advantages such as low cost, stable quality, and customizable product varieties. It can be widely applied in industries including construction, plastics, packaging, pipelines, coatings, textiles, and papermaking, replacing traditional calcium carbonate materials and promoting the green transformation of industries.
Professor Ren Xiangkui from Tianjin University pointed out that high-quality anhydrite has significant advantages in the coating industry: its crystal structure is stable, with excellent weather resistance and wear resistance, which can enhance the durability of coating films. Secondly, it is neutral or weakly alkaline, making it safer for substrates. Most crucially, through specific process treatment, its microscopic morphology can be adjusted, enabling it to simultaneously achieve multiple effects such as filling, reinforcement, and functionality (e.g., flame retardancy, matting) – a feature that many traditional fillers lack.
In recent years, Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group has continuously advanced the industrial development of phosphogypsum around three key paths: producing green building materials from phosphogypsum, recovering sulfur to co-produce cementitious materials, and manufacturing municipal and packaging materials from phosphogypsum, achieving remarkable results.
In June 2025, Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group realized the conversion of production processes into high-quality anhydrite on a 100,000-ton industrial plant. According to market demand, it can supply 15 million tons of high-quality anhydrite annually in the future. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the enterprise will strive to develop a batch of downstream products of high-quality anhydrite with mature technologies and market recognition, build the largest national production base for phosphorus-based new functional materials, and provide a replicable green and high-value development path for the industry.
