GPC ESG Story: From Waste Dump to Rosa Roxburghii Orchard — The Green Transformation of a Mine
At Yingping Mine of Wengfu Phosphate Mine under Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group (GPC), stretches of Rosa Roxburghii trees sway gently in summer breeze, brimming with vibrant vitality. This land was once a large waste dump of the open-pit mining area, covered merely with bare loess and gravel and left idle for years. In rainy seasons, it suffered severe soil erosion and potential slope instability, becoming a typical ecological scar left by mining activities.
In recent years, Wengfu Phosphate Mine has carried out systematic ecological restoration on the large open-pit waste dump of Yingping mining area. Works including slope reshaping, site leveling and construction of several kilometers of concealed drainage ditches from mountain top to foot have effectively curbed landslides and soil loss, realizing ecological remediation, slope stabilization and vegetation restoration.
On the renovated land, the Group adapted measures to local conditions and invested resources to plant 564 acre of Guilong No.5 rosa roxburghii, totaling 62,000 plants, integrating ecological restoration with characteristic industry development. Adopting the cooperative model of Enterprise + Government + Base + Farmers, it has signed guaranteed-price procurement agreements with local rosa roxburghii processing factories. Fresh fruits are further processed into high-value products such as dried rosa roxburghii fruits and rosa roxburghii juice, building a complete green industrial chain from mine land to market.
This initiative has encouraged farmers from two local villages to engage in orchard management and fruit harvesting, enabling them to secure stable jobs and higher incomes nearby. After deducting necessary maintenance costs, all profits generated by the rosa roxburghii industry are fully distributed to village collectives and local villagers, forming a virtuous cycle of ecological restoration — income growth — field management — further restoration. The once dusty waste dump has now evolved into an industrial park for income increase and an eco-friendly livable backyard for local residents.
The remarkable transformation of Yingping Mine serves as a vivid epitome of GPC’s commitment to ESG philosophy. Phosphate mining does not have to come at the cost of ecological damage. Industrial development can well achieve harmonious coexistence with nature and win-win progress together with local people. Green development is never an extra cost, but the fundamental foundation and core strength for sustainable growth.
